On March 11th at the beautiful intercoastal waterway home of Doug and Judy Keill, the South Brunswick Islands (SBI) Rotary Club held a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition event for 18 Paul Harris Fellow recipients. Approximately 53 club members, award recipients, and their spouses were in attendance.
Pictured above, starting at the left back row are: Jim MacCallum, Doug Keill, Lacy Tripp (accepting on behalf of his late wife, Virginia, was Phillip, Lacy & Virginia’s son, also a PHF in the Wilmington club), Denny Jordan (SBI Club President), Karim Mawji, Larry Cheek, and Glenn Humbert. On the front row from the left are: Bob Stinson (PHF & SBI President-Elect), Luther Bell (outgoing Foundation Chair), Pam Hewett, Dave Jones, Sibyl McLamb (PHF and wife of WJ McLamb), Jen Vanasse, and Richie Cox.
PHF award recipients not pictured are: Bob Armour, Nancy Hanania, Danny Hardy, Steve Greiner, Suzy King, and Gary Younts.
The PHF recognition award is in memory of Paul Harris who in 1905, with 3 other prominent attorneys, founded Rotary International in Chicago. Their motto was and remains today “Service above Self”. The name Rotary was derivative of “rotating” the meetings between member’s places of business. Since 1905 Rotary has grown to 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs in 200 countries.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is indicative of service and a charitable contribution of $1,000 or more, which is contributed in it’s entirely to the eradication of hunger and disease and to the development of clean water sources and literacy programs world-wide. The programs have been so well valued that over the last 2 years, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given $355 million to the Rotary Foundation for the above initiatives.
